Cipollina,
a pony born around 1990, arrived at
Zedan Ranch January 23, 2010. She had
serious foot deformities due to a severe case of
laminitis which had gone untreated for 10
years. The condition was so grave that she
was unable to walk and had to be placed in her
stall in the arms of ranch
volunteers.
Treatment for Cipollina
was begun immediately. Initially this
consisted of weekly hoof trimming by Sonja Appelt,
DVM, which enabled Cipollina to walk again but the
disease was not regressing and she was in
significant pain so complimentary analgesic
therapy was introduced. A correct diet
for laminitic horses was also introduced in
addition to daily herbal compresses prepared by us
with herbs collected on the Ranch.
Eventually a
tendontectomy was deemed necessary but even this
surgery failed to resolve her problems. As
the situation stands at present the only remaining
hope for Cipollina is the amputation of her
rear right leg which has given out and is totally
unusable. Sergio Forapani, DVM, and two of his
colleagues will perform the surgery while
Marco Avaro, P.E., will implant the prosthetic
device, generously donating his professional
services and the prosthetic to our little
Cipollina.
